Poems.

Two pieces for this time of year: Heat and River Scenes.

River Scenes

i.             Pond Skater

With a whir of wings;
dart left, dart right, dart out of sight.

      Pause again,

thread legs dimpling the water’s meniscus,
      balancing body and wings atop.

Below the surface,
A flash of accelerating stickleback snap.

      Move now for life,

Dart left, dart right, dart out of stickleback sight!

ii.           Trout

I swim out smoothly lazy,
      from the shaded willowed bank.

Sun motes from the surface,
      silhouette the dancing fly above.

I rush, and snap my meal,
the ripples revealing I am here.

Outside the river the angler casts,
too late to catch me this time.

iii. Kingfisher

I was made from a handful of jewels and turquoise;
gems coalescing, sparkling, following my beak of coral.

I have to eat small river fish,
their gloopy flesh keeps the jewels glued together.

Shhhh – it’s a secret for us two, not others!

Heat
Corn is waving,

Like bristles on Hog’s skin.

Goose-bumped by cool breezes, now and then in the heat.

August day, so heavy it’s got us all beat.

So heavy it’s got us all beat.

From the warm sticky train, the land’s folding and waxing,
Earth’s muscles flexing to let out a sigh.
As we ride in the freight, going by.

Ride in the freight going by.

Thick rainless air, like Glycerin and water.
In the distance trees dancing; mother Cedar, Shrub daughter.

Mouth dry and sticky, like a crick with no water.

Dry and sticky, like a crick with no water.

Stetson-headed the sheriff shumbles down Main Street,
Sweat kissing the dust on his boot in the heat.

August day, so heavy it’s got us all beat.

So heavy it’s got us all beat.

Fame in the Desert, a Virtual tour of Norfolk. Where is the Love?

Hi everyone and welcome to my latest Blog! News and a mix of my poems lyrics work, holiday links for you to see the places I went to, also my music selections. Enjoy!

Sunday LovePoetsXXX, Live session

03 July 2011: subject “Conflict”.

An excellent session, good vibe, with everyone enjoying themselves.

I performed one piece solo “Fame in the Desert” another - “Where is the love?” with me on the verses, Flamegirl on the chorus. Thank you April and Caroline for making the night possible!

http://twitter.com/#!/LovePoetsxxx

Fame in the Desert
Once on the mountain, the world before,
all an offer to me.
Fame in the desert with the tempter beside,
whispering soft it could be.

See it flowing, flowing down,
water down my window pane.
Like the sunshine, new each day,
some things are always the same.

Once in the city, heavy from the usual score
she’s still around, I don’t know you.
Celeb promos, but no one caring is close
so money lights, they will do.

See them following, following me,
through the streets, cross the corners again.
Why should I face them, their needs to meet,
the special one I remain.

I took the bait, now some scary tightrope
how quickly cool they move on.

I re-invent see I’m something new now,
but lost myself in this chameleon.

Crossed the world, but it never bit back,
seems retributions an illusion.
Like what we see, may never be,
glints of clear in confusion.

Where is the Love?

Where is the love? I left a message, you haven’t called.
Maybe it’s lost in the ethers’ traffic, you’re wondering too,
So we both got stalled.

Where is the love? I thought we knew, no doubts aboutcha.
Yet it’s been a long while with no returning
No “right back atcha”.

Where is the love? It’s just hiding, seek and it’s clear.
All the love you need, was just waiting for you here.

Where is the love? I ‘m sinking, thinking if we’re apart
I’ll need you hurry back soon, fill up this depression,
Where used ta be my heart.

Where is the love? No need for words continue.
When you get here, gonna keep you to me always,
Find all the love that’s in you.

Where is the love? No need to fuss or fret.
No other one I know, compares to you my pet.

Now Done Bro

Now done Bro, I do what I can
Cos helpings my nature, makes me a better man.
Now done bro, now need to ask “what’s up?”
...Just send in the request, and I’ll fill your cup.

See it all good things coming, closer to us all.
Keep you close to me sister brother,
I’ll need you to help straighten me up if I fall.
If I fall.

Now done Bro, bystanding ain’t the answer
Cos when you see the need, action hotsteps the dancer.
No done bro, my pleasure to lift you, ain’t no cause for regret
Cheer you when you make the Big Time, getting closer the time’s now set.

See it all good things coming, closer to us all.
Keep you close to me sister brother,
I’ll need you to help straighten me up if I fall.
If I fall.

My Poems drafted in the LovePoetsXXX session;

titles: “Conflict“, “Words Flowing on”, “Words a bubblin’ ”.

Conflict

Conflict.

Just a word getting real,

when you’re pushed around

then licked.

Conflict.

Better tool up in your mind,

polish up your arguments,

avoiding being dicked.

Conflict.

Waking eyes open too late to the ruse.

But I never knew or thought,

after always a poor excuse.

Conflict.

There’s a meaning underlying the word,

instead of war we sanitise,

the semantics of the deadly absurd.

Conflict.

Child soldiers, human traffic,

lives and souls daily bought.

Takes a brave man, maybe alone,

overcoming all the evil that’s been wrought.

Words Flowing On

What if all the words just went on?

Blethering torrent, slave to the rhythms,

insisting, urging,

on till meaning’s gone.

What if all our talking

was sounds of empty schemes.

Like to trying to sleep in daytime

with content-less dreams.

What if all the days

just came and went.
Like the leaves

falling from our calendars,

despairing when your money’s all spent.

Words a bubblin’

I love u like crazy; but u break mi heart in bits.

Mi head’s all clear; but mi body tourettes n fits.

Weez not getting on; but I’m loving tha juices n spark.

I’d like ta go pump iron; but mi feet stray into tha park.

When young I’s going live eternal, like superman;

now it’s all half over, days flushed down tha pan.

Adjectival descriptions of tha conflict phenomenon

curving n contrasting

as tha words a bubbling

going on n on.

How many alternatives do I think?

For I’s flowing wit tha words,

faster n a blink.

Adjectival descriptions of tha conflict phenomenon

curving n contrasting

as tha words a bubbling

going on n on.

This is mi end of tha conflict rhyme,

people get ready for I’s stopping,

simply now’s the time.

Reasons to and not (Poem, notes), Building Resilience, Maryport Blues Festival, The Micah Conversation.

Hi every one, here's my Blog this month...

“Reasons to and not” (poem making). Sources and notes:

“Stone dry inside”; an unconscious  link to Godfather III. May mean goodness remains inside even though all bad events acts flow over outside in this life (Godfather’s, played by Al Pacino) Or ...

Flow of info in the modern world, no pause to act; or cognitions to assess, true, untrue? An inspirational clip/ “the inch” speech clip by Al Pacino from YouTube, link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO4tIrjBDkk

Cognitive process i.e. we accept what comes in as data, thoughts (cognitions then assess this) leads to acceptance rejections, emotions of actions. But “filters” act on data, i.e. our beliefs, values, “rule” re the world and how it should be etc. Our upbringing and education we have learned (“IF this happens / is true, THEN...”)

One criticism: is data coming in true (valid)? Are our senses reliable Kant : the only thing I can be certain of is that, I cannot be certain of anything” Immanuel Kant (1724 – 1804) a self contradictory statement, since it excludes the position that one can in fact know something. My thanks to The Maryvale Institute for their training in philosophy! (really how to make a better argument & think)
Link: http://www.maryvale.ac.uk/index.php

After reading Wilful Blindness by Margaret Heffernan. Amazon link to:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wilful-Blindness-Ignore-Obvious-Peril/dp/184737770X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306161957&sr=1-1

I made a listing of “Reasons to believe and not”, with some of my own thoughts added. Chorus - repeated - came later. Fairly simple rhyme scheme, at one point “rhyme within rhyme” s it were (example) of lines).

The reference to “Brain on a silver platter” not a threat but an appeal to think things through for yourself. Rene Descartes “I think therefore I am” modern replacement is I am therefore I think (not)?

Kate and Wills Ride Out: a poem for the Royal Wedding

Hi everyone,

Following my last blog on Royal Rhyme I decided to write one for the recent Royal Wedding, hence it is in Royal Rhyme. I took as my model the poem by Thomas Wyatt "They Flee from Me", so it is a little old fashioned in feel and tone; but perhaps like Kate's dress it is echoes of past tradition blended with the modern.

In the lines are also references to the meaning of such a public event, like all weddings it is a symbol of future hopes, also at this time of year leaving bad weather behind and seeing new life spring up round us. It could also be taken to mean the event viewed as a turning point leaving past troubles behind. I'm also aware that I've adapted a line from Seamus Heaney where he stated that poetry is a "dream dreamt while awake" and indeed the Royal wedding had a slightly unreal (?) fairy tale quality to it.

Heres's the poem, till next time keep safe...

                Kate and Wills Ride Out

Kate and Wills ride out in a coach, to new hopes shared by all

With waving hands to greet the nations cheers.

Forgetting past histories shadows, now sunshine after sometime squall
brave fronting new hearts, love casting away fears.

The turning point is shared by all along their ways

we greet their happy hopes we share in them too

so many cares now swept aside, now spring and summer blooms anew.

May fortune smile her graces, upon the youthful pair

this day’s divine, but better may it come,

Events that follow, children love and coronation day’s sweet air,

When sceptre and orb will greet, the new placed crown.

And all faces bright with ne’er a frown;

such joyful future who would miss?

We smile in mind’s eye at the picture of such bliss!

It was a dream, but in day’s waking clearly felt.

When all was new, made in the happiness

into the crowd’s joyous feelings, my smile my heart did melt;
surfeit of delight chasing away all sadnesss

And all Winter’s long days lack of gladness.

So may they accept these lines from a humble man,

No bard that’s great or touched by fame, yet I do what I can.

What Lives Evolves

Hi all,

Is this posting a bit of a rant? Not really, more a statement to take the past, be aware, yet also take on board the reponsibility to evolve. All forms of Art start as an awareneness of the past techniques etc, but then go on to include new ideas.

I may take a sly pop at Rhyme Royal but then discover that the form is in fact used in one of my favorite poems  - by Thomas Wyatt "They flee from me that sometime did me seek".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhyme_royal

Similarly the Petrarchan Sonnet form, is used by Wordsworth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrarchan_sonnet

The poem uses straight forward rhymes, with a slang feel to it, judge for yourselves...Till next time take care.

What Lives Evolves

Some sad deluded fool boasting,

’ bout being master of the petrarchan sonnet.

Well whatever pills you on they working fine,

just glad that I’m not on it!

But I’ll Amen to assimilating tools that I can use,

Don’t bother with some clever archaic textbook stuff,

I won’t be falling for that self-promoed PR genius ruse.

You mentioned royal rhyme.

But I’m too busy sucking in the world,

then melding crafting it into the new.

For scanning dead museums I don’t have the time.

Don’t get me wrong,

I’m hip to your techniques.

But taken from their context they’ll stay

placed in memories, back of my head,

‘nough said?

Yet known you can’t deny their distanced echoes knowledge,

rippling out into today’s content, influencing the muse your chasing,

no disregard or striking from the record as it were.

All this poetry making,

sure ain’t no episode of Perry Mason.

So, don’t be a fossil, some quaint thing,

a dead rock found upon the beach.

What lives evolves.

Take and evolve the forward moving wave,

shifting into future’s reach.

Creating lyrics poems. LovePoetsxxx - discovery workshop.

Hi all, hope everything going well for you.

Went to first meeting last Tues of local poets group in Northampton - LovePoetsxxx. Theme of the workshop was "discovery".

I drew a spiderdiagram; placing discovery in the centre and then drew in some legs labelled: internal, external, "Love travellers" (i.e. a relationship of discovery) known/unknown, life journeys, places. Basically aspects of what discovery can mean.

As an aside: T.S. Eliot, From Four Quartets, "Little Gidding":-
http://www.tristan.icom43.net/quartets/gidding.html

"We shall not cease from exploration

And the end of all our exploring

Will be to arrive where we started

And know the place for the first time."

Did the person change or the place? Perhaps both.

In my library; Music CD's on exploration:

Vangelis 1492 Conquest of paradise
http://www.amazon.co.uk/1492-Conquest-Paradise-Vangelis/dp/B000025SL5/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1301560802&sr=1-1

Jean Michel Jarre, Waiting for Cousteau (title track)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Waiting-Cousteau-Jean-Michel-Jarre/dp/B000025CDD/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1301560868&sr=1-2-fkmr0

...back to the workshop, theme discovery...

I decided to cut up the word discovery itsself to see if I could work the bts into some sort of poem, here's my attempt:-
Dis me not, me real.
No mask or cover.
Roots riddim @ tha disco
stranded in a corner,
red spotlit cove.
Very in tha light, naked
found discovered.

I believe that David Bowie, used a similar technique in cutting up old diaries and re-arranging the words.

I also tried to do the first draft of a longer poem, realising afterwards that Shakespeare had written a line in one of his love sonnets  - Sonnet 19 - re "times antique pen".
http://www.shakespeare-online.com/sonnets/19.html

Yet I Don't Know Yet (working title!)

All attempts are pointless
In time my skin became the map
all creased, furrows, lines.
Places inked: "here", theresville",
"boredom gulch", "lovers rest".
All attempts pointless, to map before time.
You'll try - we all do-
It's no crime.
Be patient, my tip for you.

I think I'll also try to work in /develop the idea of experience leaving a mark - internal watermark on us. I will just mention the book by Philip Roth,  The Human Stain as well worth reading:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Human-Stain-Philip-Roth/dp/0099282194

I will round up with one of my own poems - "Beachcombing" - keep safe till next time. Louis :-)

Beachcombing

Beachcombing out my life,

Of ends of cheque books, written and spent.

Leaving stubs,

Of events and costs recorded,

The pages rent.

Though the tides recede, these things rest and mingle;

With the tidemarks in myself,

As sifting through life’s shingle I find:

Some photos of a last day out,

Last letter from Mother before his death,

Grandfather’s pit recorded;

Some rosin for the doghouse bass,

To let the bow grip the string, give breath.

When next at St. Bees beachcombing

Beside the sand and seaweed frond;

I “think on” as my Gran would say,

Of strands that link before and now, to beyond.

And my wind and April sun blessed ears listen;

As the sea speaks murmuring,

Through breakers’ foam and glisten.
